Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network Cleveland

in Groups and Organizations

Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) Cleveland, a local chapter of the national Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network, formed in 1995. GLSEN Cleveland’s purpose was to “create a safe atmosphere for in schools for GLBT students…as well as to provide resources for students and educators seeking to foster an environment of respect on their campuses.” GLSEN Cleveland members held meetings on the second Wednesday of each month at Lakewood Presbyterian Church, 14502 Detroit Avenue. Together with PFLAG Cleveland, TransFamily of Cleveland, BlackOut Unlimited, and the LGBT Community Center of Greater Cleveland, GLSEN Cleveland has participated in the Safe Schools are For Everyone (SSAFE) program and the annual Vigil For Our Children in order to “draw attention to the discrimination, prejudice and harassment that gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered children face in their schools, churches, and communities, and to express our love, understanding, and support for them.”
