North Coast Lesbian Association

in Groups and Organizations

The North Coast Lesbian Association/Alliance (NCLA), a lesbian social and support group, formed in the early 1980s. The North Coast Lesbian Association (also called the North Coast Lesbian Alliance) was organized for the purpose of providing “social activities, support, and good times” to Cleveland-area lesbians. Early on, the NCLA held monthly meetings at the Women’s Building Project (located at the Civic, 2130 Mayfield Road). Outside of regular monthly meetings, the NCLA also held a separate monthly Support/Discussion group. The NCLA sponsored a variety of women-only events for group members, including game nights, dances, video screenings, potlucks, and picnics. The NCLA also hosted weekly noncompetitive women-only softball events, generally open to members and non-members alike. Throughout much of the 1980s, the NCLA held women’s softball training and matches at Cleveland Heights High School’s outdoor field on Sunday afternoons. After the demise of the Women’s Building Project forced the NCLA to relocate from the Civic, monthly meetings continued to be held at member’s homes and LGBT-friendly Cleveland-area venues. The NCLA remained active into the late 1990s.
